October is Fire Prevention Awareness month.  The members of our department will once again be hosting the annual Fire Prevention Open House at Pownalborough Station located on River Road/Patterson Road.  We’ll have lots of great information on fire prevention and what to do in case of a fire.  The firefighters will show the gear they have to wear when they go on a call and will answer any questions you may have about their duties, the training they have to have, the equipment they use and about the fire trucks and other apparatus.  We’ll also have different fire trucks from other towns.  There will be hot dogs, cold drinks.  We hope you’ll bring your family to this very important, informative and fun event.

Also, we would like to remind everyone that this would be a good time to change the batteries in your smoke & CO2 detectors, check and clean your chimney and make sure your stove, furnace or other heating equipment is clean and safe for the upcoming winter season.  If you lose your power and use a generator, make sure to keep it outside to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.  _____________________________________________________________________________________________________

As the fall/winter season is coming our way, it’s a really good time to begin getting things ready for the change that will be coming.  If you burn wood, PLEASE make sure to have your stove or other heating units checked, your chimney cleaned and any flammable materials kept away from heat sources.  Check your home for places where heat can escape; around windows and doors especially. Have emergency supplies handy in case of power issues.  Keep a check on the batteries in your smoke and CO2 detectors.  Just make sure you’re ready for what a Maine winter can bring and always put safety first.
